oven
A device made for cooking food. Fuel to heat ovens was placed either round the clay chamber, which was usually open at the top, or inside. Ovens were primarily for baking, but could also serve as stoves on which pots could be placed. The metaphorical use of the word denotes the fate of the wicked, who will burn as an oven, on the Day of Yahweh (Mal. 4:1). In Matthew's Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 6:30) Jesus argues that if God has given some natural beauty to grass which is cast into the oven as soon as it is grown, surely he must care much more for human beings?
